Low-lying nest

A female osprey, identified by her necklace of brown chest feathers, calls from a low-lying nest at Lake Arrowhead in Milton. The nest is one of several built in the rootballs of dead trees that litter the shallow lake that straddles the Milton-Georgia border in Vermont's Champlain Valley.

Lake Arrowhead osprey

An adult osprey enjoys a morning trout while sitting near its Lake Arrowhead nest in Milton. Ospreys have blossomed in Vermont in recent years thanks to efforts of former resident Meeri Zetterstrom, who died recently, the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife, Central Vermont Public Service and others, who worked together to restore the endangered birds. Adult ospreys weigh only about 4 pounds, but have a 6-foot wingspan. Five pairs now nest at Lake Arrowhead.
