Ice Cobbles on the Middlebury River

During one of this winter's thaws, the waters of the Middlebury River rose and ripped out ice that had formed along its edges. I expected to find the ice gone or piled on shore but was surprised to find that the broken ice had actually formed into cobbles that resembled the rocks in the riverbed!

It's amazing to me that sometimes water can act just like a rock during the frigid Vermont winters. It's raining again, but the temperature is right around freezing and the snow isn't melting. I'd guess this is adding ice to the river this time, not taking it away.
